Brief Portrait
Athanasios Tsiokanos is an Professor of Sport Biomechanics in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science at the University of Thessaly, Greece. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1984), a Master’s degree (1986) and a Ph.D. (1995) in Sport Biomechanics from the National Academy of Sports ofSofia, Bulgaria. From 1987 till 1998 he worked as a researcher at the Department of Sport Biomechanics of the Hellenic Sports Research Institute, Athens, Greece, focusing on the evaluation of physical abilities and biomechanical analysis of Greek and foreign elite athletes. From 1996 till 1998 taught at the Department of Physical Education and Sport Science of University of Thessaly as an assistant Lecturer and in 1998 he became a Lecturer in Sport Biomechanics at the same Department. In 2003 was promoted to Assistant Professor and in 2010 to Associate Professor. He is the Lab Director of the Center of Research and Evaluation of Human Performance, D.P.E.S.S., University of Thessaly and section editor of the journal“Inquiries in Physical Education and Sport”. His interests relate to biomechanical analysis of competitive sports (especially track and field events) and analysis of human locomotion movements. He is the author or the co-author in 30 papers published in refereed international and Greek journals. In his leisure time he enjoys long distance running and listening to classical music.
