Research Expertise
Clinical Exercise Physiology
Brief Portrait
His scientific career began at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens where he was awarded a BSc in the field of exercise sciences. Earning a meritorious Hellenic State Scholarship Foundation award for 4years allowed him to move to Manchester Metropolitan University, to study for a PhD in clinical exercise physiology. He capitalized on his PhD training by moving to the University of California San Francisco as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Medicine. At UCSF he run two NIH funded exercise studies: one in HIV infected individuals and the second in end stage renal failure patients. During his postdoctoral training he was trained in MRI and MRS techniques. He also succeeded in his first NIH grant as a PI (mentorship award) and he had the opportunity to teach in the human physiology course at the UC Berkeley-Extension. He returned to Europe with an independent competitive EU named grant while he was later employed at CERETETH where he lead the Clinical Studies Laboratory (and lead the Kinesiology department), now IRETETH-CERTH. Since Dec 2013 he is a faculty member in “Exercise in Clinical Populations”, at the School of Physical Education and Sports Science, the University of Thessaly, Greece. He is a reviewer in 17 scientific journals, an editorial board member in the World Journal of Nephrology, World Journal of Clinical Urology, Journal of Sleep Disorders & Therapy, Frontiers in Striated Muscle Physiology and an Associate Editor in BMC Nephrology and BMC Research Note Journals. He is an expert in the area of uremic Restless Legs Syndrome with many publications and invited reviews. He has translated and scientifically edited to Greek a free diving manual and a patient’s booklet for exercise prescription, while he has three international book chapters on sleep disturbances and quality of life in end stage renal disease patients. He is the director of the LIVE Lab and he supervise 6 PhD students (3 full time) and 6 MSc while his group has 3 full time postdoctoral researchers.
